Summer Work Tasks

1) Download the document to the right that is entitled 'Containment of Communism'. These are notes for the rest of the year and cover both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. These are the two topics you will need to know about for your exam.

2) I want you to read through the Powerpoints posted on here too. Do it, you will learn. You should also read all the booklets that I gave out in class. If you don't have these come and see me. I will be in school until next Wednesday.

3) Write a 1000 word essay entitled:

"Why did the United States fight in the Korean war?".

4) Watch a Vietnam War film: Platoon, Apocalypse Now, The Deer Hunter, Born on the Fourth of July, Full Metal Jacket, Good Morning Vietnam. etc.

That's it. Have a wonderful summer!

Marshall Plan and Truman Doctrine

In 1947, US president Harry S Truman gave a speech in which he promised that the USA would give aid to countries that were resisting communist takeover. This became known as the Truman Doctrine.

In June the same year, George Marshall, US Secretary of State, gave a speech outlining a way to keep communism at bay and build up markets for US exports. It became known as the ‘Marshall Plan’.

$13 billion was provided by the US government for all European countries to rebuild. In Italy and France, communist parties were growing in size, and the aim was to cut them down. During the plan’s four-year run, industrial production in Western Europe went up by 40%.

Marshall Aid was available to all countries who had been affected by the war, but the Soviets would allow none of it to enter their satellite states.
